Dexter Shurney MD, MBA, MPH

Dexter Shurney MD, MBA, MPH

Dr. Dexter Shurney currently serves as Assistant Professor, School of Medicine, and Medical Director, Employee Healthcare Plan, for Vanderbilt University and Medical Center. He has an extensive background in health care management and policy. In 2007, he was named to Chair Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen’s Diabetes Prevention and Health Improvement Board. Dexter serves on the boards of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the American College of Medical Quality and represents ACMQ as the organization’s delegate to the American Medical Association.

Previous positions that Dr. Shurney has held include chief medical officer for the disease management and wellness company, Healthways, Health Policy Strategist in the department of Global Government Affairs for the biotechnology company Amgen Inc., chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and editor of the Journal of Managed Care Physicians. Dexter has held leadership positions in several startups including Optate, producer of online employee health benefits applications, which was subsequently acquired by WebMD. Dr. Shurney is board-certified in general preventive medicine and public health.

John A Gurley

John 'Gus' Gurley is a Senior Fellow at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara where he explores systems neuroscience and neural networking and sponsors an endowed professorship in quantitative biology. He also serves as a Member of Nobel laureate David Gross' Director’s Council for the Kavli Institute.

Prior to joining Kavli Institute, Gus co-founded Digital Instruments (which later merged with Veeco), where he developed NanoScope, the first commercially successful scanning tunneling microscope, and became one of the world’s authorities on scanning-probe control systems. Gus received his BS in physics and his MS in scientific instrumentation from UC Santa Barbara.  

Troy Pickett, MA

Troy is a healthcare business development consultant with over 25 years of experience in areas such as population health management with a focus on wellness and productivity management, and distribution channel development.
 
After completing his Master of Arts degree from the University of Denver in Exercise Science, Troy built his consulting business where he worked with healthcare organizations and large employer groups to develop and design health promotion programs that included the use of health risk assessments, onsite biometric screening and health coaching services.  He also was a founder/managing partner of East-West Health Centers in Denver, CO which is an integrative healthcare clinic that combines allopathic medicine with complementary health care practices.
 
Additional prior experience that Troy has includes over twenty years in business development working in a variety of roles with organizations such as Staywell, McKesson Health Solutions, and currently is Regional Vice President of Business Development at Nationwide Better Health.
